The Sam Sawet is one of the lesser-known natural cats of Thailand, where solid-coated landrace cats of this type have lived for generations. Its name in Thai refers to its even, single-toned colour. Like the better-known Korat, Suphalak and Wichienmaat, it belongs to the family of native Thai cats traditionally regarded as auspicious, though it never achieved the international fame of its cousins. It remains a rare, largely undocumented breed, valued in its homeland for its friendly character and maintained chiefly by Thai enthusiasts working to preserve the country's indigenous cats.

The short, smooth coat is extremely low-maintenance, needing only occasional brushing and the odd polish with a soft cloth to keep its sheen.
