📜 History & origin
The Abyssinian's exact origin is debated, but genetic studies suggest they originated from the coast of the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia, not Ethiopia. The first Abyssinian exhibited in Britain was brought from Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) around 1868. The breed was nearly wiped out twice — by World War I and World War II — but breeding programs in the US saved it.
🧼 Care & grooming
Minimal grooming — a weekly once-over is all their short coat needs. Maximum mental stimulation is required — they need to climb, explore, and hunt. Wall-mounted shelves, cat trees, and interactive play daily are essential. They do not enjoy being confined to small spaces.
🩺 Health notes
Prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKD of the red blood cells), and Renal Amyloidosis. Dental disease is also common. DNA testing is available for PRA and PK deficiency.
