📜 History & origin
Ragdolls were developed in California in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker from a white domestic longhair named Josephine. Baker claimed the breed's docile temperament resulted from genetic mutations triggered by trauma Josephine suffered, though scientists dispute this. The breed was recognised by the TICA in 1979 and has grown into one of the most popular breeds worldwide.
🧼 Care & grooming
Surprisingly low-maintenance for a longhair — their semi-long coat rarely mats. Brush twice a week. They are trusting to a fault and should never be left outdoors unsupervised. They are slow to mature, not reaching full size until 4 years of age.
🩺 Health notes
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the main concern — always buy from breeders who screen with cardiac ultrasounds. Bladder stones can also occur. They are generally healthy, but their trusting nature makes them vulnerable to outdoor hazards.
