📜 History & origin
Native to the US state of Maine, the Maine Coon is one of North America's oldest natural breeds. One legend claims they are descendants of Marie Antoinette's long-haired cats, shipped to America before her execution. The more likely origin is that they developed from cats brought by Viking explorers or later by seafarers, naturally selecting for cold-weather survival traits over centuries.
🧼 Care & grooming
Their semi-long coat needs 2–3 brushing sessions per week to prevent matting, particularly around the belly and behind the ears. They love water, so weekly paw baths are usually well-tolerated. Mental stimulation is essential — puzzle feeders and leash walks keep them happy.
🩺 Health notes
Prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Hip dysplasia can also occur due to their large size. Reputable breeders screen for HCM with regular cardiac ultrasounds. They are generally robust but benefit from annual checkups.
