📜 History & origin

The Norwegian Forest Cat has roamed Scandinavian forests for thousands of years and features prominently in Norse mythology as the fairy cats (Skogkatt) of the goddess Freya. Vikings may have kept them as ship cats. The breed nearly disappeared in the 20th century but was saved by a breeding programme in the 1970s and officially recognised by the FIFe in 1977.

🧼 Care & grooming

Their waterproof coat needs minimal maintenance — twice-weekly brushing except during spring moult when daily grooming is needed. They are natural climbers and need a large cat tree or outdoor access. Thrives best with access to an enclosed garden or catio.

🩺 Health notes

Generally very healthy. Prone to Glycogen Storage Disease Type IV (rare but fatal), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, and Hip Dysplasia. DNA testing is available for the glycogen disorder. Their dense coat can hide weight gain, so regular weigh-ins are recommended.

Fun fact: Viking legends mention large cats called Skogcatts travelling on the ships of Erik the Red, possibly the ancestors of today's Norwegian Forest Cat.
