The Colorpoint Shorthair was developed in the mid-20th century by American breeders who crossed Siamese cats with red-coloured domestic shorthairs and Abyssinians to introduce point colours the traditional Siamese could never produce — reds, creams, and a range of tortie and lynx (tabby) points. The Cat Fanciers' Association recognises it as a breed in its own right, while some other registries treat these colours simply as additional Siamese varieties. Beyond their coat colours, Colorpoints are bred to the same elegant, svelte standard as the modern Siamese.
🧼 Care & grooming
Grooming could hardly be simpler — the short, fine coat needs only an occasional brush or a stroke with a damp hand. The real commitment is emotional: Colorpoint Shorthairs crave attention and conversation, and form intense attachments to their chosen people. They do not cope well with long hours alone and are happiest in a home where someone is around, ideally with a feline companion to keep them company. Expect to be followed, talked to, and supervised at all times.

Sharing the Siamese gene pool, the Colorpoint Shorthair is prone to the same conditions — including progressive retinal atrophy, amyloidosis affecting the liver, certain dental issues, and a sensitivity to anaesthesia. Responsible breeders screen their lines, and a long, healthy life is the norm with good preventive veterinary care. Their fine coat offers little insulation, so they appreciate warmth and cosy sleeping spots.
