📜 History & origin
The American Wirehair began with a single spontaneous genetic mutation. In 1966, a litter of farm kittens was born in Verona, New York, and one red-and-white male had an unusual wiry coat. A local breeder recognised the mutation as something new, and selective breeding from that one cat — named Council Rock Farm Adam of Hi-Fi — established the breed. The wirehair gene is dominant, and the breed is considered a uniquely American development, descended from the American Shorthair.
🧼 Care & grooming
The wiry coat is surprisingly low-maintenance and should NOT be over-brushed — too much grooming can damage the delicate crimped hairs. An occasional gentle comb and the cat's own grooming are usually enough. The coat can be more prone to oiliness, so an occasional bath helps some individuals. Routine ear cleaning and nail trims complete the care routine.
🩺 Health notes
A robust, genetically healthy breed thanks to its American Shorthair heritage and outcrossing. No serious breed-specific hereditary diseases are widely documented, though as with the American Shorthair, occasional cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are seen. Some individuals have sensitive skin and benefit from a gentle, low-residue shampoo when bathed.
