Makes
Several small servings from one fillet

🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 skinless, boneless cod (or other white fish) fillet
  • Plain water for steaming — no salt, oil, butter, or seasoning of any kind

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Check the fillet carefully by hand for any small bones and remove every one.
  2. Place the fish in a steamer basket or a colander over gently simmering water.
  3. Steam for 8–10 minutes, until the flesh is opaque all the way through and flakes easily with a fork.
  4. Let it cool completely, then flake into small, bite-sized pieces, checking once more for bones.
  5. Serve a small amount on its own or scattered over the usual meal as a topper.
Nutrition: White fish like cod is very lean, easy to digest, and highly palatable, with a strong aroma that often tempts a cat who is off its food. It supplies quality protein and a little omega-3 while staying low in fat.

📝 Notes

Always cook fish thoroughly — never serve raw, which risks parasites and a thiamine-destroying enzyme. Feed fish as an occasional treat rather than a staple: it is not nutritionally complete and a fish-heavy diet can crowd out balanced nutrition. Refrigerate leftovers and use within 24 hours.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
