🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 tin sardines in spring water, drained (about 90 g)
  • 4 tbsp rolled oats, blitzed to a coarse flour
  • 1 small egg

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C) and line a baking tray.
  2. Mash the drained sardines thoroughly, bones and all, into a smooth paste.
  3. Mix in the blitzed oats and egg to form a stiff dough.
  4. Roll into small balls, flatten into coin-sized cookies and place on the tray.
  5. Bake for 15–18 minutes until firm and golden, then cool completely before storing.
Nutrition: Sardines are one of the best natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids for a glossy coat and healthy joints, and their soft edible bones add calcium, while wholegrain oats give the cookies enough structure to hold up as handy training treats.

📝 Notes

Choose sardines tinned in spring water, never in brine, oil or tomato sauce, and serve as an occasional treat rather than a meal. The soft, fully cooked bones are a natural calcium source and safe to include. Store in an airtight tin for up to four days.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
