🧺 Ingredients

  • 1 tin of sardines in spring water (no salt, no oil, no brine)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • 1 tablespoon of plain cooked pumpkin (optional, for gentle fibre)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Drain the sardines well and check carefully for any large, hard bones — the small soft ones are safe and a good calcium source.
  2. Peel the hard-boiled egg and mash it roughly with a fork.
  3. Add the sardines and mash everything together into a soft, spreadable paste.
  4. Stir through a little cooked pumpkin if using, to firm up the texture.
  5. Serve a small spoonful as a topper or treat, and refrigerate the rest in a sealed tub for up to three days.
Nutrition: Sardines are one of the best natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which support skin, coat and joint health, while egg adds highly digestible protein and the soft edible bones contribute calcium.

📝 Notes

Choose sardines packed in spring water only — versions in brine, oil or tomato sauce are far too salty for cats. Oily fish is a treat rather than a staple, so keep portions small and offer it a couple of times a week at most alongside a balanced diet.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
