Top Cat

Top Cat — 'T.C.' to his close friends — is the smooth-talking, scheming leader of a gang of alley cats in the Hanna-Barbera animated series that first aired in 1961. Set in a New York City alleyway in Manhattan, the show follows T.C. and his crew — Benny the Ball, Choo-Choo, Fancy-Fancy, Spook, and Brain — as they run cheerful confidence schemes and dodge the exasperated local beat policeman, Officer Charlie Dibble.

The character was openly modelled on the wisecracking hustlers of classic sitcoms, and much of the humour comes from T.C.'s endless get-rich-quick plots and his ability to talk his way into — and usually out of — trouble. Despite his constant scheming, T.C. is fundamentally loyal to his gang, and the series balances its street-smart comedy with a real sense of camaraderie among the cats.

Though the original run lasted only a single season of 30 episodes, 'Top Cat' became a long-running favourite in reruns and achieved lasting, outsized popularity in some countries — notably Mexico and the United Kingdom — where the show developed a devoted following far greater than its brief original broadcast might suggest. Decades on, T.C. remains a fondly remembered example of the golden age of television animation, and one of the most charismatic fictional cats ever created.
