Salem Saberhagen

Salem Saberhagen is the talking American Shorthair black cat from Sabrina the Teenage Witch — the comic-strip character developed into a long-running US television comedy that ran from 1996 to 2003. In the show's mythology, Salem is not a cat at all but a 500-year-old warlock who attempted to take over the world and was sentenced by the Witches' Council to spend a century as a cat as punishment. Salem's personality remains entirely human: sarcastic, scheming, and obsessed with food and global domination — characteristics his voice actor Nick Bakay delivered with deadpan brilliance over seven seasons of the show. The role established the template for the wisecracking television cat sidekick. On screen, Salem was played by a series of trained black American Shorthairs (with full-body animatronic puppets used for certain physical scenes — the producers initially attempted to use only real cats, but the demands of a multi-camera sitcom forced compromise). When Sabrina was rebooted as the darker Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix in 2018, Salem returned as a non-speaking but supernaturally aware familiar, played by a cat named Cairo. Notably, the warlock backstory was invented for the sitcom: in the original Archie Comics, Salem was simply an ordinary black cat with no history as a disgraced sorcerer. The original Salem of the 1990s sitcom remains one of the best-loved fictional cats in modern television.
