Toonces the Driving Cat

Toonces the Driving Cat was a recurring sketch on the American comedy show Saturday Night Live, first appearing in 1989. The premise never changed and never needed to: Toonces is a family cat who, improbably, can get behind the wheel of a car and drive — 'a cat who could drive a car, just not very well.' Every sketch built to the same inevitable punchline, with Toonces steering the car straight off a cliff while his horrified owners screamed, followed by a comically obvious toy car tumbling down a hillside.

Toonces was played on screen by a puppet and by real cats posed with his paws on a steering wheel, and the deliberately cheap effect of the plummeting model car was part of the joke. The sketches spawned variations in which other animals took the wheel, but the driving cat remained the star, and the character became one of SNL's better-remembered animal creations of the era.

More than thirty years on, Toonces endures as pop-culture shorthand for cheerful, low-budget absurdity — the idea of a perfectly ordinary house cat calmly, catastrophically operating machinery it has no business touching. For a certain generation, 'a cat who could drive a car, just not very well' is a line that still raises a smile.
