Laid on its side with a doorway cut into one end, an empty cereal box makes an instant pocket-sized hideaway that kittens and small cats love to duck into, ambush from and nap inside.

🧺 You will need
- An empty cereal box or similar cardboard carton
- Scissors
- A small soft cloth or offcut of fleece
🔧 How to make it
- Empty and flatten out any inner bag so the box is clean and dry.
- Lay the box on its side and cut a rounded doorway into one end.
- Snip a small peep-hole in the opposite end so your cat can see through.
- Tuck a soft cloth inside to make a comfortable floor.
- Set it in a quiet corner and let your cat discover it in their own time.
💡 Tips
Cats feel safest with more than one exit, so the second hole matters — it stops the den feeling like a trap. Toss a small toy inside to spark that first curious investigation.
Safety: Remove any plastic liner, staples or tape before offering the box, and replace it once it becomes chewed or damp. Keep dens away from cords or anywhere a cat could be shut in.

It repurposes a box headed for the recycling into a snug retreat that helps a nervous cat feel secure. Make a few and cut connecting holes to build a little cardboard warren.
