Homemade cat food
Turkey & Pumpkin Gut-Soothe Purée
A plain, gentle purée of poached turkey and a little pumpkin — the kind of bland, easy-to-digest food a vet often suggests for a cat recovering from a mild tummy upset.

- 25 min
- Makes
- 3 days
🧺 Ingredients
- 120g skinless turkey breast, poached
- 1 tablespoon plain cooked pumpkin (not pie filling)
- A few tablespoons of the unsalted poaching water
👩🍳 Method
- Poach the turkey breast gently in plain water until fully cooked through, with no pink remaining.
- Let it cool, then flake it and remove any bone, gristle or fat.
- Blend the turkey with the pumpkin, adding a little of the cooled poaching water until you have a soft, spoonable purée.
- Serve small amounts at room temperature, a little and often rather than one big bowl.
- Refrigerate the rest for up to three days and warm gently before serving.
Nutrition: Poached turkey is very lean and easy to digest, while a small amount of pumpkin adds soluble fibre that can help firm up loose stools — which is exactly why this simple pairing is such a common convalescent-diet suggestion.
📝 Notes
Bland, low-fat, single-protein meals like this are what vets often recommend for a day or two while a mildly upset stomach settles — but they are a short-term convalescent food, not a balanced diet. Any vomiting or diarrhoea that lasts more than a day or so, or a cat that is off its food, lethargic, or has blood in its stool, needs veterinary attention rather than home management, because cats can go downhill quickly.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
