About 12 small bites

🧺 Ingredients

  • 60 g fresh or plain tinned sprats (in water, no salt), well drained
  • 1 tbsp plain cooked pumpkin puree
  • 1 small egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp oat flour, to bind

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C) and line a small baking tray.
  2. Mash the drained sprats thoroughly with a fork, checking for and removing any tough bits.
  3. Mix in the pumpkin, beaten egg and oat flour to a thick, shapeable paste.
  4. Roll into tiny bites and flatten slightly on the tray.
  5. Bake for about 12–15 minutes until firm and lightly golden, then cool completely before serving.
  6. Store in the fridge and use within three days, or freeze.
Nutrition: Sprats are a small, sustainable oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support skin, coat and joints, while pumpkin adds soluble fibre and the egg binds the bites with extra protein.

📝 Notes

Choose sprats tinned in water with no added salt, or cook fresh ones plainly. Oily fish is a treat, not a daily diet — too much can affect vitamin E balance over time, so offer these a couple of times a week at most.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
