🧺 Ingredients
- 120g cooked, boneless, skinless salmon (plain, unsalted)
- 1 tablespoon plain cooked pumpkin (not pie filling)
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- A little unsalted water if needed
👩🍳 Method
- Poach or steam the salmon plainly until fully cooked, then flake it and carefully check for any bones.
- Mash the flaked salmon with the pumpkin and beaten egg into a soft, spoonable mixture.
- Press into a small oven dish and bake gently until set and cooked through.
- Cool completely, then flake a small portion over your cat’s usual food.
- Refrigerate the remainder and use within two days, warming slightly before serving.
Nutrition: Salmon is one of the best natural sources of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which support a soft, shining coat and calm, healthy skin, while a little pumpkin adds gentle fibre and moisture to the loaf.
📝 Notes
Cooked salmon is a wonderful occasional treat, but it should never be raw (risk of parasites and an enzyme that destroys thiamine) and never tinned in brine or flavoured. Oily fish is best kept to a small, occasional part of the diet rather than a daily food, as too much can upset vitamin E balance. As with any homemade recipe, treat this as a topper alongside a complete, balanced diet, not a meal in itself.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
