🧺 Ingredients

  • 80g fresh mackerel fillet, skinned and pin-boned
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons plain water or unsalted fish broth
  • 1 teaspoon plain cooked pumpkin (optional, to bind)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Poach or steam the mackerel plainly until it flakes easily, then cool and check carefully for any bones.
  2. Scramble the beaten egg gently in a dry non-stick pan with no oil or seasoning until just set, then cool.
  3. Flake the fish and break up the egg together, adding a splash of water or broth to loosen into soft, moist flakes.
  4. Stir in a little pumpkin if you want the mix to hold together more.
  5. Serve a spoonful over the usual food and refrigerate the rest in a sealed tub for up to three days.
Nutrition: Mackerel is packed with the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which support skin, coat and joints, while egg adds highly digestible protein and the amino acid taurine.

📝 Notes

Oily fish like mackerel is rich but should be an occasional topper, not a daily staple, because too much can unbalance a complete diet. Serve small amounts alongside your cat's normal food.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
