Kangaroo & Pumpkin Novel-Protein Mince

A gently cooked mince of lean kangaroo — a genuinely novel, ultra-lean red meat — with a little pumpkin, aimed at cats with common protein sensitivities.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 150g lean kangaroo mince
  • 1 tablespoon plain cooked pumpkin (not pie filling)
  • A splash of unsalted water for cooking

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Warm a non-stick pan and add the kangaroo mince with a splash of water.
  2. Cook gently, breaking it up as you go, for about 8 to 10 minutes until no pink remains.
  3. Drain off any excess liquid and let the mince cool to room temperature.
  4. Stir the cooked pumpkin through the cooled mince until evenly combined.
  5. Serve a small spoonful as a topper or treat, and refrigerate the rest for up to four days or freeze in portions.
Nutrition: Kangaroo is an exceptionally lean red meat rich in protein, iron and zinc, and as a novel protein it is far less likely to trigger an existing food allergy, while a little pumpkin adds gentle fibre to support digestion.

📝 Notes

Kangaroo is a true novel protein — a meat most cats have never eaten — which makes it useful when trialling a diet for a cat with suspected food sensitivities to poultry, fish or beef. It is also very lean. As with any new food, introduce it gradually, and run elimination-diet trials under veterinary guidance so nothing else undermines the test. This is a treat or topper, not a complete, balanced meal.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
