Tiger

Tiger was a grey striped cat belonging to President Calvin Coolidge, one of several animals in the famously pet-filled Coolidge White House. The cat was often seen draped around the president's neck like a scarf, an image that delighted staff and visitors alike.

Tiger became national news when he wandered away from the White House grounds. So attached was the president that a description of the missing cat was broadcast over the radio, asking the public to help find him — an early example of a presidential pet making headlines across the country. Tiger was recovered after being found some distance away.

The episode captured the warmth of the Coolidge household, which kept an unusually large menagerie, and cemented Tiger's small place in White House history as the cat whose disappearance was important enough to interrupt the airwaves.
