Shironeko

Shironeko — Japanese for 'white cat' — was a placid, fold-eared cat from Japan who became a global internet phenomenon thanks to his extraordinary air of calm. Known to English-speaking fans as 'Basket Cat' or 'the Zen Master', he was famous for sitting serenely in wicker baskets while objects were carefully balanced on his head — lemons, tangerines, tiny toys, even small stacks of items — without the slightest sign of annoyance. His owner photographed and filmed his unflappable daily life and posted it online, where his half-closed eyes and look of perfect contentment struck a chord with millions seeking a moment of peace. Shironeko's YouTube channel and blog drew enormous followings, and he was often described as the most relaxed cat on the internet. He lived a long life and died in 2020 at around eighteen years of age, leaving behind a vast archive of soothing images.
