Rademenes came to an animal shelter in Bydgoszcz, in northern Poland, as a two-month-old kitten so ill with a severe respiratory infection that staff feared he would not survive. They began treatment anyway, and the little black cat pulled through. Rather than being rehomed, he stayed on at the shelter, and it was then that he revealed the trait that would make him famous.
As other animals came in sick, injured or recovering from operations, Rademenes began to seek them out — settling beside them, grooming them, and curling up to sleep against dogs and cats as they healed. Staff at the shelter, only half joking, began calling him their nurse: he seemed drawn to exactly those animals who needed comfort most, and his quiet presence appeared to soothe them.
In 2015 photographs of Rademenes cuddling recovering patients spread rapidly through the international press, and the story of the rescued kitten who grew up to care for others struck a chord with readers around the world. He became the shelter's mascot and a small ambassador for the work of animal rescue.
Whatever the science of it — cats are drawn to warmth and company, and a calm companion can genuinely lower a frightened animal's stress — Rademenes became a much-loved symbol of second chances: an animal who was given care when he needed it, and who seemed, in his own way, to pass that care on.
