Kunkush was a fluffy white cat who fled Iraq with his family, carried in a basket as they made the dangerous crossing to the Greek island of Lesbos. In the chaos of arrival his basket broke and Kunkush bolted, becoming separated from the family he had travelled so far with.
Volunteers found the frightened, hungry cat and cared for him, but had no idea who he belonged to. Determined to reunite him, an international network of rescuers, translators and social-media users launched a search that spread across Europe, sharing his photo and story in the hope his family would see it.
Remarkably, it worked. The family, by then resettled in Norway, recognised their lost cat, and Kunkush was flown to be reunited with them — a small but powerful story of compassion amid a vast humanitarian crisis, and a reminder of how much a beloved pet can mean to a family that has lost almost everything.
