Toxoplasmosis, Cats and Pregnancy: The Litter-Box Fear That Is Mostly Wrong
Being told to rehome your cat when you're expecting is common advice — and mostly wrong. Here's what toxoplasmosis actually is, where the real risk comes from, and how to stay safe without giving up your cat.
Few pieces of advice cause more unnecessary heartbreak than "you're pregnant, so you'll have to get rid of the cat." Well-meaning relatives, out-of-date pamphlets, and the occasional under-informed doctor still repeat it. The fear behind it is real — a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii can genuinely harm an unborn baby — but the leap from "this parasite exists" to "your cat must go" skips almost everything we actually know about how people catch it. In reality, the overwhelming majority of human toxoplasmosis infections have nothing to do with a pet cat, and a few simple habits reduce the risk close to zero. No one needs to lose their cat over this.
What Toxoplasmosis Actually Is
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, a single-celled parasite that can infect almost any warm-blooded animal — including humans, livestock, and cats. It is one of the most common parasites on Earth; a large share of the human population carries it silently, often without ever knowing. In a healthy person with a normal immune system, a first infection usually causes nothing at all, or a brief bout of mild flu-like symptoms — swollen glands, tiredness, a low fever — that passes on its own. The body then keeps the parasite in check for life and, crucially, becomes immune to future infection.
The reason cats sit at the centre of the story is biology, not blame. Cats — and only cats — are the parasite's definitive host: the single group of animals in which Toxoplasma can complete its full sexual life cycle and produce egg-like oocysts that are shed in faeces. Every other infected animal, humans included, is a dead-end "intermediate" host where the parasite simply forms dormant tissue cysts. So a cat is the one animal whose litter box can, under specific conditions, contain infectious material. Why the Litter Box Is a Smaller Risk Than You Think
Three facts about how the parasite behaves take most of the danger out of a litter box:
- Cats shed the parasite for only a short window — usually once in a lifetime. A cat typically sheds oocysts for just one to three weeks, and almost always only after its very first infection. After that, its immune system suppresses shedding. Most adult cats have already been through this before you ever meet them, and are no longer shedding at all.
- Freshly passed oocysts are not yet infectious. When a cat sheds oocysts, they need one to five days in the environment to mature ("sporulate") before they can infect anyone. A litter box that is scooped every single day removes the faeces before it becomes dangerous.
- Indoor cats fed commercial food are very low risk. Cats catch Toxoplasma by eating infected prey or raw meat. An indoor cat that hunts nothing and eats cooked or commercial food has little opportunity to become infected in the first place, so it has little to shed.
Put those together and the picture changes completely. The genuinely risky scenario is narrow: a cat that has just been infected for the first time, whose litter box is left uncleaned for several days, handled without hygiene. Where People Really Catch Toxoplasmosis
Here is the fact that reframes the whole conversation: most human toxoplasmosis infections do not come from cats at all. They come from food and soil. The leading routes of infection are:
- Eating undercooked or raw meat — especially lamb, pork, and venison — which can contain tissue cysts. This is the single biggest source in many countries.
- Cured, dried, or smoked meats that were never cooked through.
- Unwashed fruit and vegetables contaminated with oocysts from soil.
- Gardening or handling soil where infected cats (often strays) have defecated, then touching the mouth before washing.
- Untreated water in some regions.
Notice that a well-cared-for house cat is nowhere near the top of that list. In fact, studies have repeatedly failed to find that simply owning a cat raises your risk of toxoplasmosis. Handling raw meat in the kitchen is a far bigger exposure than cleaning up after your cat — which is exactly why the advice to "get rid of the cat" misses the point so badly.
Why Pregnancy Changes the Stakes
If a healthy adult usually shrugs off toxoplasmosis, why the concern in pregnancy? Because if a person is infected for the very first time during pregnancy, the parasite can cross the placenta and infect the developing baby — a condition called congenital toxoplasmosis. Depending on the timing, this can lead to miscarriage, or to problems for the baby such as damage to the brain and eyes, sometimes only appearing later in childhood.
Two points bring the risk back into perspective. First, the danger is tied specifically to a first-time infection acquired during pregnancy. How to Stay Safe — Without Losing Your Cat
Guidance from veterinary and medical bodies is consistent: you can keep your cat throughout pregnancy. Take these sensible steps:
- Have someone else scoop the litter box daily while you're pregnant. If you must do it yourself, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Daily cleaning is the key — it removes waste before oocysts can become infectious.
- Keep your cat indoors and don't feed it raw or undercooked meat, so it has little chance of picking up the parasite to begin with.
- Cook your own meat thoroughly — until it is no longer pink and the juices run clear — and avoid tasting meat before it's done.
- Wash fruit, vegetables, and salad well, and wash hands, boards, and knives after handling raw meat.
- Wear gloves when gardening or handling sand, and wash your hands afterwards; cover children's sandpits when not in use.
- Keep petting, feeding, brushing and cuddling your cat. None of these ordinary interactions transmit toxoplasmosis. The infection route is faecal, not the fur, the whiskers, or the purr.
What About the Cat Itself?
Most infected cats show no symptoms whatsoever, because their immune systems keep the parasite in check. When illness does occur — more often in kittens or cats with weakened immunity — it can include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, or breathing and eye problems, and your vet can advise on treatment. There is no reliable everyday test to tell you on a given morning whether a specific cat is actively shedding, which is precisely why the sensible approach is behavioural: daily scooping, indoor living, no raw meat, good hand hygiene. Those habits work regardless of any single cat's status.
The Bottom Line
Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy is worth taking seriously — but the classic reaction to it is aimed at the wrong target. The parasite is far more likely to reach you from an undercooked lamb chop or an unwashed salad than from your own house cat, and the litter-box risk all but disappears with daily scooping and clean hands. Your cat is not a hazard to be removed from the home; it's a companion whose comfort matters especially during a stressful, tiring time.
