Sleeping in Sinks & Basins
Comfort & cool-seeking
The curious feline habit of curling up in a bathroom or kitchen sink combines a love of snug, enclosing spaces with a preference for cool, smooth surfaces.
Few cat quirks are as photogenic — or as baffling — as the sink sleeper. There is something irresistibly comic about a cat folded neatly into a porcelain basin, and the behaviour is common enough to have its own genre of internet photographs. Behind it lie several very sensible feline instincts.
First, cats love spaces that hug them. A sink's curved sides press gently against the body from several directions at once, which taps into the same security-seeking instinct that draws cats to boxes, bowls and laundry baskets. That contact is reassuring, mimicking the safety of a snug den where a cat can rest without feeling exposed.
Temperature matters too. Smooth ceramic and metal stay cool to the touch, so on a warm day a sink is a natural place to shed a little heat. A basin near a window may also offer a sunbeam, a dripping tap to bat at, or simply a good vantage point over the room. Add the fact that bathrooms carry a strong concentration of their favourite person's scent, and the sink becomes a cool, cosy, familiar-smelling nook that is hard for a cat to resist.
