Why the Keyboard, Every Time?

It can feel personal — as if your cat waits for the least convenient moment — but several very ordinary feline drives converge on that warm rectangle in front of you:

• Warmth. A running laptop, a sunlit page, or a freshly-printed stack of paper is pleasantly warm, and cats are relentless heat-seekers.
• Your scent and attention. The things you handle most carry your smell, and a cat that wants your company learns fast that sitting on what you are looking at gets an instant reaction.
• The centre of your focus. Cats are socially observant; the spot your eyes and hands keep returning to is, quite logically, the spot most likely to earn a response.

It's Learned Behaviour Too

Even "negative" attention — a sigh, a gentle shove, being picked up and moved — still counts as attention to a cat. If parking on your keyboard reliably makes you stop and interact, the behaviour is being rewarded and will happily repeat. Many cats also simply want to be near their person, and the desk is where you are.

What It Means for You

• Set up an appealing alternative right beside your workspace — a warm bed, a cardboard box, or a perch by the window — so the cat can be close without being on the keyboard.
• Offer a short play or grooming session before you settle down to work, so the cat's need for attention is already met.
• Try not to make moving the cat into a fun game of its own; calmly redirect to the alternative spot and reward the cat for using it.

When to Be Concerned

This is normal, sociable behaviour and not a health issue. A sudden, dramatic increase in clingy attention-seeking in a cat that was previously independent can occasionally reflect stress or discomfort, so it is worth noting alongside any other changes.
